That is an interesting read. One of the things that stuck out to me though is it said:

amid much excitement as every user is promised an unprecedented gigabyte of storage space for messages

I always thought a gigabyte was 1024 MB, but in gmail is says 1000 MB. Am I right?

kodaks, you're right - a gigabyte is 1024Mb, and Gmail offers 1000Mb - which is close, but not exactly a 1Gb.

Of course, in a few years can we hope for a Googol-byte of storage from Gmail?

No- if you go back somewhere you'll find that Google was emailed about this. They replied that they do in fact give 1 Gig of space- however in order to make it look nice and pretty it is shown as 1000MB
