How can you tell they came from gmail?

Anyone figured out what to look for in the referrer to tell if a visitor came from gmail versus adwords/other content..?

No, but now that you mention it I think I will. It'll be interesting to see the relative ROI of Gmail compared with a standard Google search in future.

I'll get back with some test results later. :)

they say in the gmail tos or the privacy or whatever ..somewhere ..that they make it pretty clear to the owner of the landing page that it's from them no?

I am not getting a referer from my listing in GMail.

Minimized "referrer" header information. When you click on links in messages, the web browser that loads contains a referrer header. When you click on links in Gmail, Google takes steps to eliminate this referrer header, preventing others from knowing that you clicked on a link from an email.

[gmail.google.com...]

That may just refer to non AdSense links in the email body to fight spam.

The referring domain is the same as the one used for content partners. You'll probably see more blank referrers too, since clicking an ad opens the url in a new window.

I am not seeing any referer for a couple of different sites.

I guess that is one way to reduce the number of webmasters from gaming out the system. Even though you can bring your sites up in the emails it is not nearly as valuable as when you can accurately track results.
