does robots.txt really effect ranking?

I really want to know if robots.txt really effect ranking in search engine. If so what search engine is more or less effected by it.

How do you think a robots.txt file, which prohibits bots from part or all of your site, would help your ranking?

The robots.txt file instructs good bots on where you don't want them to go. But it doesn't make them go everywhere else on your site, and it doesn't induce the bots to come to your site in the first place.
