Using AJAX to Display Progress?

...jumping into AJAX, point me in the right direction!

I have an application that returns a decimal, which then becomes a graphical progress / % complete bar using css -- right now, the progress bar is refreshed by meta refresh but I thought this may be a nice way to dive into AJAX.

I'm pretty sure I have to load it into a div, but can I set up a time refresh on the load? I do have some experience with JS (mostly just customizing public stuff to my own needs) but this will be my first AJAX project, if someone can give me some pointers.

use window.setInterval(func, 500), where func is the name of the function who will be called every 500 millisecond.
