I assume it screws into something...?
Is it DIY related?

It does screw into something. It's not DIY related.

mack's very close. A climbing pin, or piton, is hammered into rock by a climber. However, this gizmo isn't hammered into wherever it goes, and it isn't used when climbing rocks.

You've gone cool again Mack. You were *very* close before. People who use pitons *may* also use these gizmos.

An ice screw (for climbing)?
jetboy
7:41 pm on Jan 7, 2006 (gmt 0)
Spot on! A Black Diamond ice screw, used by climbers on glaciers and ice walls to perform a similar function to a rock climber's piton.
Edit: The screw is hollow (hence no pointy end), and the small metal section is just a flip-up handle to aid insertion.

Eek! Presumably that means I host the next Gizmo quiz (at 6pm GMT next saturday?)
