I understand from teh IT dept of a larg Hospital that this has knocked their broad band connections offline because of the smoke imagine.
Has this affected any one here?
Heard lots of rubbish on the Beeb about no toxic substances ..( if more people knew organic chemistry they wouldn't be able to give out this missinformation )..French news is full of the sloppy brits angle ..
Some of my neighbours are already getting ready to go sick ( some have done so ) with "get my christmas shopping done while being off work due to respiratory complaint brought on by English toxic smoke plume" ..
They didn't beleive me when I told them the company whose tanks went up first and blew out everyone elses in the depot was Total Fina ( french )..cos french news only mentioned the british companies that had their tanks go up as a result of the initial explosion ..
As we have had some light rain I have got some sample grey water and can analyse it to see what it has got as added extras ..
Next year I can imagine easily all the farmers here putting in compensation claims for whatever reason ..til they discover it was Totals fault :)
Appears to have been by a lorry driver who smealt petrol and hit the emergency stop button in his cab, from there it went boom!
The pictures in the Daily telegraph are of a war zone, really worrying
essex boy ..in advance of the analysis ..I can predict it will contain exactly what burnt petrol, diesel and aviation fuel ( not to mention the other stuff they had there ) would leave as residues normally in their smoke ..
Now would you want to breath exhaust fumes for 3 days? they kept mentioning CO and "soot" ..but there is also all of the heavy metals cadmium etc , some lead for the non domestic user grades even some tin ..some nasty methylates ..some wonderfully carcinogenic aromatiques and metaketones got burned up ..even with the elevated temperatures they didn't all "crack" to just carbon and water ..
Anyone with close or long term exposure would have had very interesting blood analysis results for remnants of solvants ..and even more interesting results if they have their nail clippings and their hair cuttings looked at ..did they say wash all veg before eating?
how many people got headaches?
There'll be a wee blip in the leukemia figures over the next ten years or so for those of us who were downwind ..
And some other higher than normal incedences of birth defects and carcinomas ..
Which will of course be "explianed"..

Look up what was said about the environmental damage that would have been the case when the oilfields in Kuwait went up were they not in a desert area with low population ..the "plume" still did some damage to the people who were unprotected in the area ..
This was "refined" for the most part ..that was "crude" but this was also lots of smaller tanks of specialised products with additives in ready to be delivered ..fuel isn't just carbon , hydrogen and oxygen at the point where you use it ..it's got all manner of added metals and soaps ..
Spend half a day or so using your favourite search engine to lookup petroleum refining ..
