But the purpose of the device is not to lubricate.

A small hint about the "lever". It's not really a lever. "Trigger" would be a more appropriate term...

By the way, I recognized the object as something used to harm animals, from watching PETA films.

But to find the real mccoy it helped that the brand name was right there on the front of the device. Hard to read, but there: Kerner, with a sheep head and little zap bolts coming out of it.
