Ice..... on my windshield this morning. It seems to early so I will be in winter denial for another month.

Have you seen any evidence of winter yet?

Yesterday in many places in the UK we had one of the warmest October days recorded with temperatures tipping 70 Deg F.

(Today it's back to normal).

Winter?

Near me, in central London, the cherry trees have buds!

You guys have it too easy.

A good hard winter makes you strong and tough, kills the vermin and makes you appreciate summer. But it can at least wait until December.

First sign of winter? That would have been back in August, when the nighttime temps plummeted to the low 40's and my fingers were so cold I could barely type.

I would swear that I saw a couple of snowflakes in the air yesterday. But, I was the only one to see them... possibly something from my youth is finally catching up to me.

Second sign of winter?

Yesterday I re-mounted the propane wall heater so we don't freeze our widgets this winter. And I fixed the storage shed to keep the snow from drifting in.

Was Jerry Garcia part of that "dream"?

I wasn't dreaming. I saw them!

Maybe it's something to do with the abilities of inter-dimensionalism and time transferance. I think Jerry was less of an influence than Deep Purple, Ozzy ala Black Sabbath, and Z-Z-Top.

A good hard winter makes you strong and tough...
Agreed. Around here thats from December thru February. It's all that extra from March to November that wears me back down.

Winter?

We're beginning to feel it now that November is approaching.

The daily high temp has gone from 88ºF to around 87ºF.

You can really feel the difference.

Time to get the blankets out for when it really starts getting cold at night - 83ºF.

You have to be careful not to get frost bite if your are outside too long. Remember to layer your clothing, you can always remove a layer, but you can never put on another layer after you leave home. Its just wise to be prepared. ;-)

That is my idea of a nightmare. Who wants 83ºF at night time? I would have to wring out the sheets in the morning.

My idea of a good climate is a sunny 75ºF during the day with 55ºF during the night and enough rain at night to make it unnecessary in the daytime :)

Incidentally, I visited Barbados a coupe of times and I read that the coldest temperature EVER recorded there (day or night) was 59ºF.

Actually it's very comfortable. There is a constant on shore breeze that cools everything off. We get many guests from the UK, Scandinavia, etc. and everyone loves it.

We do not use or need A/C.

About the only time of the year it gets a little sticky is from mid-September to mid-October.

You ain't just a'whistlin' Dixie! ;) Here in Illinois, it's frequently 83, 85, even 87 and higher all night long during the summer. Couple that with no breeze and 95% humidity and things get pretty rough. We know of people from coastal areas who move to Illinois and think they know about humidity...then it settles in on them and they realize they had it pretty easy on the coast! ;)

Our winter has been gearing up for the past few weeks. We had our first frost a few nights ago. Days are still getting into the 60's though. My problem is that we only keep our house at 52F (not a typo - that's fifty-two) all winter long and that's pretty cold for indoors. It saves big on the heating bill, but wearing three layers of pants and five shirts all winter, and still being cold, really gets on my nerves! :(

>>keep our house at 52F

That is a bit harsh, is it really worth saving money to endure that?

I would rather take on a second job than live in a meat locker all winter.

Heh, we already work two jobs, both from our home, one being to pay the bills and the other being the family business. Actually, we spend most of our time, summer or winter, working in our basement. We have a wood-burning stove down here that keeps a pretty steady ~75F once we get it going in the mornings, so we really only have to deal with the 52F when we go up for meals and during the night - and you can keep pretty warm in bed, provided you use enough blankets.

It's not that we couldn't afford to heat the whole house to a more comfortable temperature, but the savings come to better than $200 per month and we prefer to put that extra money into the house payment to pay it off sooner. Just a matter of priorities! ;)

And believe it or not, we've never been as healthy as we have been since we stopped heating so much. The cold seems to make the house pretty inhospitable to germs. We often go entire winters with one cold or less apiece, and we never have the flu.

The geese have pretty much moved southward, not many leaves left on the trees, however it has been around 10 degrees above normal that has disappointed the natural gas man.

They say it is going to be a mild winter, so we will probably get dumped on. I am hiring out my snowplowing this year just in case. Wish I had a wood burner, I have plenty of wood and no place to burn it. Next year I will be prepared.

First signs of winter?

That would have been at 2 a.m. yesterday morning.
Approximately 35 km from any sort of major highway, getting the car back onto it's wheels, collecting the junk off the ground that made its way out the broken windows, tipping the friendly Jeep driver that happened to have a winch, bump starting the half crushed Audi 90, then driving back to the Rally headquarters...

...quickly hopped into car number two, only to realize I wasn't going anywhere until the car heated up and defrosted the incredibly thick frost off the windshield.

An eventful weekend? Yes it was.

Under a clear sky with Mars shining in the western sky we have a hard frost on everything tonight. The grass in the yard is almost crunchy when you walk across it.

I have no idea how cold it actually is out there, I'm in here where it's warm.

Warm is relative... but I think I'm at least into the 60's. When there's frost on everything 60 is definitely warm. Fifty two is a bit chilly for my liking... warm but not warm enough.

It's been unusually mild here. No snow and hasn't rained since early September.

It the first halloween in 7 years where it has not rained or snowed for the kids trick or treat.

High of 70 today - 63 tommorrow, and lows of 42.

I always wondered where those geese came from in winter time...somewhere colder than here.

Yes, it gets hard to remember things when you get to that age. I have three years to go ;)
