Wilma's aftermath cuts power in Miami and shuts down my web hosts

Hi there

Just wondered if anyone else is affected by this. I am making an assumption here as we cannot figure any other reason for this.

Yesterday afternoon, UK time, all my sites started showing a "Site Suspended" notice! I immediately contacted my immediate host, a very good friend who offers me an excellent deal via his cPanel reseller biz. He has as much idea as I have... none! Turns out his cPanel Hosting is in Miami! A few emails and attempts at phone calls later... with no result, phone rings but no one answers... emails not answered! All very odd!

I am assured there is no problem on the account billing side. We cannot see any possible reason for the Suspension... not just my sites but ALL my reseller hosts client sites. Sooo... we can only assume our prime hosting company is amongst the 6 million odd affected by the power cuts they are apparently suffering there.

I find this all a little strange. Firstly, that our Hosting company, a prime cPanel web host, who have always been excellent with support and service in the past, around 2 years as their clients and no problems, have seemingly been caught 'with their pants down' in this way.

Secondly, if it is the case that the sites are down due to power cuts, seems odd for the default page that springs up is a 'Site Suspended' page. Not too good from my site visitors point of view, who must be under the impression that we have not paid our bill... have problems with billing... are unable to pay! None of which apply of course... but nevertheless... embarassing!

Just wondered if you guys agree... to our assumption being probably on the right track... and if anyone can throw any light on this... anyone else suffering same problem?

If it is down to power cuts... some reports on the net say power will not be re-established in some cases even up to 4 weeks! Now... that is very worrying!

Apologies for going on a bit... 'venting' I guess! :)

Anyhow, any comments will be welcomed!

Given the "Site Suspended" notice, it seems unlikely that power outages have taken your site down (unless of course they're running on greatly decreased generator power and have to cut bandwidth and resources). It could be an error in their bookkeeping, such as an unrecorded payment, and they're unable to fix it at the moment due to reduced staff or whatever. In any case, if its a reputable host, give them a couple days to get back on the ball. My guess is that something hurricane-related has happened to them, and if you can afford it, they probably deserve a little time to get things rolling afterwards.

A HA!

Thats right!

Our normal truckload of SPAM has been missing the last couple of days.

I remember a huge decrease in SPAM after a hurricane hit south Florida last year (or was that two years ago).

I was down for close to two days. Apparently Verio has a facility there and their backup generators failed.
