The U.S. Justice Department is suing the realtors.

"The government charges that the rules illegally could restrict discounting and disadvantage Internet competitors," says the WSJ.

The WSJ went on to note, "Strong sales and rising prices have been a huge boon to brokers, who despite higher prices continue to charge commissions of 5% to 6% of a home's sale price -- reaping an estimated $60 billion in such fees last year."

The suit says "online commerce brought innovation and lower fees to air travel, stock sales, insurance, music and other markets. It offers the same opportunity for consumers buying a home."

I've bought several houses. On most, we got the agent to forego some of the commission to make the deal work.

On the last deal the broker said, "I never let a full commission get in the way of a sale."
