" This is Larry and Sergey. These are the biggest dreamers the web has seen in years. They aren't going to toy with building a browser - they are toying with the whole shabang - an Operating System.

This is not a "interface" or "api" war - this is a PLATFORM war!

Page and Brin have more vision in their little pinkies than Woz/Jobs/Gates combined. This foo about indexing the sum total of human knowledge isn't foo - they really believe it. Money is just a tool - knowledge is real power. Those that index the knowledge are the all powerful of the future.

> The platform is dead.

deja vu, Steve Jobs said near the same in 1984. Here we are 20 years later and still using propietary platforms. We'll be here in another 20 years and people will still be saying this "web as platform" horse manure."

Trillianjedi:
But it will also require ultra-fast broadband to really be practical.

Dark Fibre? Who aquired them recently? Ahh, yes!

Good point. I've no doubt that the recent dark fibre purchase could be used for a lot of things - distributed computing included.

But to get it on the users desktop, you still need ultra-fast broadband going into the users home.

Or a breakthrough in compression... Something I expect in the next 2-4 years.

obtained a piece without the confirmation news, let the person be startled

If only Google's translation software was as good as their search ;-)

These pictures look like fakes to me.

However, I agree with Brett on this one. An Internet powered OS is most likely the next leap in home computing, and Google are in the best position to deliver it.
