Virus Removal

Oy. So who wants to advise me on a virus removal from a friend's system? Virus removal is not my bag (baby), but I already know the specific steps to remove this one.

The real problem is, her system freezes right after it finishes loading the desktop. This is obviously the "oy" factor. Can her system be saved at all, or will I be forced to completely wipe the hard drive?

BTW, I hate the Melting Worm. Gah. It's seriously old, but yet, still around.

There are some good remaval instructions over here [securityresponse.symantec.com]. Which Windows version are you running? XP? It may well be possible to remove it if you boot into SafeMode - hit F5 or F8 during the boot sequence. Don't forget to disable System Restore too. :)
