This is probably on old topic, but I hope not. I know that some of the members of this forum are world class travellers, others just wait to take a yearly vacation, while still others are dreaming of the beach life on a private island. But among us all we do move around. So, what are some of the most impressive/memorable places you've visited? They could be natural or man-made, although I personally prefer the natural variety.

1) Big Hole Valley in southern Montana.
This place offers a fantastic view of the Sawtooth Range, and is rich in American history.

2) Grand Tetons
A little farther south in the Rockies range, this is simply one impressive sight.

3) Palouse Falls
Located in south-east Washington state. An interesting thing about this part of the country is that it all looks flat if you're driving across it. But there are more valleys and river cuts than you can shake a stick at. You just have to find them.

4) Ocala National Forest
Located in central Florida, it's really a lot of swampland. But it was there that I observed a pair of Golden Eagles on a daily basis, making it very memorable. Canoeing next to gators was something too.

5) Horse Creek Hot Springs
Located directly on the Idaho/Montana border, 300 feet down from the mountain-top. This is where deer, elk, moose, bear and cougars still outnumber humans. The hot spring is very nice, the terrain is awesome.

RE: Palouse Falls. I'm headed to NE Oregon tomorrow for a week, and plan to visit the falls on my way back.

well i was in nimbin, new sout wales, australia. the people over there didnt recognize that the 1960's are over and still drive arround in painted vw busses, plant weed, wear funny clothes and woman who live there dont shave under the arms.
strange place, must see. totaly retro! another great place is the "subway" in coffs habour (also nsw), the sandwiches there are really awsome and the best in australia. dont know why, they all have the same inside but the coffs harbour subs taste different.

worst place in australia: alice springs. if you want to hide your belongings in a safe place, put then in one of your bodyholes. if you dont want your car stolen, take the wheels off and battery out, empty the tank. leave doors and windows open, otherwise they will smash all windows. if you need to go for a walk after dawn and want to avoid trouble, shoot everyone you see when you come close to the river. good luck!

...if you really want to see a beautiful place come to Loch Lomond. The "bonnie banks" are only about half a mile from my house. I have lived around here all my life,...

Would have to agree. Spent my pre-teen years not far from Loch Lomond and then moved to Kent (South Downs, etc) as mentioned by Limbo.

Favourite/most memorable places?

Chichen Itza - Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico.
Ngorongoro crater & the Serengeti plains, Tanzania.
St Vincent & Bequai (first ever holiday abroad)
Kent - up the Downs, all the villages, woodland, orchards, streams and a pushbike. Ah, memories of an Enid Blyton childhood.
Travelling the Ring of Kerry (Eire) in a horse-drawn gypsy caravan - hard work but worth it.
London - down by the Thames in time for the sunrise.

It's actually Scotch Whisky

[mild retort]I knew that. It's been a long time and better forgotten :)[/mild retort]

I'm impressed. This is the longest thread I've managed in 2 years. I missed out on Palouse Falls last week - truck wanted to act funny and I wasn't laughing. I wasn't too far from Hell's Canyon in Oregon. The mountains, lakes and valleys are just great. I used my glasses to watch a bear crawl around on a ridge near Joseph Mountain.

There are many, many other places I could add to this great list. However, I'm feeling nice and won't subject you all to the enhanced list.

I'd love to see Stonehenge, for instance - Why? Its a pile of old stones by the edge of a motorway.....

Yes, and the Grand Canyon is just a big hole in the ground. ;)

Seriously, the pictures I've seen of Stonehenge have looked pretty neat. But I guess they've all been taken from the same direction, because I've never seen a racetrack in them. Good grief, wasn't there anywhere else to build the thing than right beside an ancient monument? Just what you want; roaring engines and shouting crowds while you're trying to sightsee.

Topeka Kansas - man that place rocks!

Aw, okay, I am being sarcastic.

Poros in the Greek Islands is awesome. Nice tavernas and friendly locals. Spent many a night drinking metaxa and ouzo and dreaming of retiring there.

Burano Italy. It's a small island in the same lagoon as Venice (about 40 minutes away by vaporetto). Every house there is painted in bright colors, and must be repainted every year. The tradition started so that fishermen could more easily pick out their houses as they returned from fishing. It's also one of the tidiest places I've ever been. Virtually every house had a broom and dustpan hanging beside the front door.

It's also famous for its lace; now unfortunately, if you find lace there you can afford, it's probably made in China. The real Burano lace can cost several hundreds of euros for a small doily-sized piece.

The Piazza del Campo in Siena, Italy. The way the facades of the surrounding buildings and the square's shell-shaped pavement (with a slope) seem to form one organic creation is just awesome. The Palazzo Publico with its magnificent tower. Color, shape, atmosphere: nothing is wrong. You can sit down in the middle of the piazza and think "why should I ever go anywhere else" because the place is simply perfect.

Another lasting impression was my first visit to New York: the crowded streets full with busy people and the tall buildings were more dynamic than anything I'd ever seen before.

Oh yeah I once saw Glastonbury Tor at around 5 am one summers morning really took my breath away. Really Arthurian feel to that morning - the Essence of England me thinks.

Alice springs, sounds like the town I grew up in - Highest murder rate outside London(late 80's), sexual offences against kids sky high(current). Not surprisingly its got a bad reputation, house prices are at least 30% lower than surrounding towns.

Despite living their for 27 years there was this one estate where I only went 3 times in all those years, went in to a house there and thought it was a squat..... Same estate, your life expentancy was one of the lowest in the east of Engalnd.

Not nice.

you are really missing out if you don't come to Europe - we have great cities like London, Barcelona, Paris, Rome, Copenhagen, Prague...to name just a few! :)

I wouldn't mind seeing those places. But seeing as I hate citys and crowds and such. I've had panic atacks just visiting Indy and And subway travel is very difficult for me unless it is an off time.

However there are so many great places I haven't seen that are even in my own state. And these places are a lot more afordable then a 2 or 3 thousand dollor plane ticket to Europe. So until I hit the lottery or the price of trans continintal air fair dropes to $200 round trip I'll just have to keep my travels local.

I have a goal to visit every state/national park in Indiana anyway and that will pretty much consume and traveling I have to do. besides It's great to go on a simple relaxing vacation for a weekend. Whenever I have gone father away I always seem to need another vacation just to recuperate from the first.

Great place to visit in Indiana--West Baden Springs Hotel It's the largest free standing dome in the world and at the time of it's operation it was the most luxurous hotel in the United States.

I would like to put in a word for Malta ( and of course Gozo ) if you've been there you'll know why ..if you haven't ..go there ..it is very small but incredibly welcoming, architecturally staggering ( apart from Valletta , Mdina etc Malta and Gozo have Neolithic structures that make stonehenge look like macdo or disneyland ...and some of the best diving and swimming in the med ..not at the tourist parts but at peters pool and some others ..you have to explore to find them )and has the worlds best firework displays ..I could go on and on just go visit ..most everyone speaks english or italian or maltese ( which is semetic ) and so any arabic etc speakers can get by too .. a little german and french you can also find speakers for ...

And if you need night clubs ..you have the latest ..or tiny little mom and pop bars ...and you gotta see what the maltese drive ....:))...and they have dragsters at hal far too ...

Any Maltese or Gozitans out there ...Saha..

That is a reason why I took my family for a five-week tour of 10 cities in Europe, from London to Athens last month. What an experience on the TUBE in London on July 21 at lunchtime!

I still prefer the peaceful of Banff-Lake Louise area in the Canadian Rockies.

Lol, Rosswal. I actually looked at it for a while thinking to myself how much had changed since I last saw Loch Lomond around 30 years ago!

1 - The Beara Peninsula [bearatourism.com] - or the Sullivan (ahem, thats me) / Beara Peninsula, as it was once known, In the south of Ireland. 5000 year old standing stones turn me on.

2 - Volcanoes National Park, The Big Island, Hawaii [nps.gov] - Because watching lava spewing hundreds of feet into the air or flowing into the Ocean... from a few feet away... is an experience you should try to fit into your schedule.

3 - Foz do Iguaçu [gosouthamerica.about.com] - The waterfalls on the border of Brazil and Argentina are ... a really well spent day. If you can only go to one side, be sure its Argentina.

Wind River Canyon - hands down. A 20 mile stretch of rock cliffs and caves and railroad tunnels and rushing river and mountain goats and antelope. No better drive in the country that I've even been on, although highway 101 in California comes close...

I forgot to mention Panormos Crete.

This is a small fishing village with a couple of beaches, a few tavernas, good food and drink and peace and quiet. (It doesn't even have any Internet cafes but there is a 15 minute bus service to Rethymnon if you must.)

And, I am going there next month :)
