Resurrecting an old discussion in a way

about what to call yourself (as in web designer, webmaster, or not, etc.):

Ran across this one somewhere late last night, and I quite like it - it's a bit "old world" yet conveys a totality, I think: "web craftsman".

I think I'll adopt it posthaste....

Hey, if I'm female and don't worry about "gender neutral"....! I don't really. If I was already using "webmaster", "web craftsman" isn't worse.... and actually does cover a lot more territory.

Around here, "web mistress" always gets you raised eyebrows....

Nothing wrong with raised eyebrows - nothing is worse than leaving NO impression at all... Of course you have to back it up with at least twice the knowledge and hard work than any male competitor. But isn't that always the case for any female who is not working as a secretary?

In a former life I worked as a freelance journalist, and I got invited to a Windows-95-is-still-not-finished-but-let's-have-a-good-time conference to Redmond. There I met a "Technical Evangelist" - which kind of impressed me back then.

Nevertheless, the folk at Microsoft seem to be very religious [microsoft.com].

Well, since this is your thread, why not do something like WordGame?

Everyone adds their version and only YOU get to delete the ones you don't want? Might get some good ideas that are acceptable.

Others can speak their piece and you can only delete. <- Almost poetic, ain't it?

Is "wizard" gender specific? In a technical way it is, of course, but if you read standard literature (Tolkien, Pratchett), Wizards seem to be rather neutrum.

So would "Web Wizard" or even "World Wide Web Wizard" be an option?

I've always liked webmaster.

But please, whatever you do, don't call me a web designer. Typical conversation at a party:

q: what do you do?
a: I do web stuff [trying to keep it non-technical]
q: oh, you mean you're a web designer?
a: NO, I'm not a web designer. A designer is someone who designs the surface of the site. I make it run.

So I'd say:
I make it run == webmaster, or whatever term you prefer instead;

I think it's schlock, yes - but then it's kind of one of those words which seems to have not only variable spelling but variable meaning.... like "dreck"....

I'm opting for Web Wizard for my new cards I think. Nicely gender neutral (as pointed out earlier), and while "netfashionist" is also gn, it comes across to me as female and somehow "precious". Perhaps because I started life as an interior designer? Among other things....

Then those who run ESL sites would be Webguists and those who run Cartoon sites might be called Webtoonists.

If you're a heavy Hemi fan you'd then be a WebisphericalChamberist, or, on the other hand, if you ran a Nutritional site, you'd be a Webasnackist.

If you ran a Goth site you could call yourself a Nut. Sometimes you feel that way, sometimes you don't, you know.

If you ran a Heavy Metal Band site, you might then wish to call yourself a WebHuhWhatchusayist
