Getting the actual number is typically free or with a very low one-time fee. There is sometimes a monthly fee for having an 800 number, sometimes not - depending on your carrier. Incoming calls are usually billed at your regular long distance per-minute rate (interstate and intrastate) ... so be sure you're on a low-cost carrier. There are tons out there - you just have to look in the right place.

I currently have an #800 at the house through Vonage. Off the top of my head its $5.00 extra a month with 100 minutes included, If I remember correctly, each additional minute is like 4.9 cents.
Its voip, and I really havent had any problems with service or quality.

Now if you want 1-800-WIDGETS be prepared to pay. Although it is illegal to hoard phone numbers like domain names, it is hard to prove someone is squatting.
