Ponce de Leon discovered Florida in 1513 and named it after all of the beautiful flowers they saw at the time. It is believed they landed near what is now St. Augustine. They continued to sail around the Florida for several months while searching for the legendary fountain of youth. Saint Augustine is considered the oldest city in the United States, and if you visit it today you can visit the fountain of youth tourist attraction and drink the water (which tastes ... well odd). It's located on Magnolia Ave which one of the most spectacular magnolia tree-top canopies you're likely to see in your entire life.

what ... it's friday ...

Ah, but that wasn't really the start of "Florida" the State, as we know it today... Florida was was admitted to the Union on March 3, 1845. ;)

The character Florida Evans originally appeared on the TV show "Maude" which debuted on Sept 12, 1972.

Another show, "Good Times", was a spin-off of "Maude" and featured Florida and her family. "Good Times" first aired on Feb 8, 1974.

mivox - not to split hairs, but I believe the question was,
Florida update started?
and not
Florida upstart dated?

keep Foo a Google-free zone

*waves revolutionary flag enthusiastically*

Besides, the title of the thread just says "Florida - anyone remember the date it started"... nothing about any "update" of anything. And Florida the State did "start" it's existence when it became a state. That's how statehood works.

Well, beside that... You could consider Florida's statehood as being an update of its territorial status too... ;)
