Is TV relevant anymore?

No, really, how many people here even watch it?

About a two months ago, I got a call from the local cable company, who were pushing their Digital Cable services. It was a slow day, so I decided to have fun with the telemarketer.

I told her that the two people who lived in our house, didn't watch TV, and could care less (which is essentially true)... The telemarketer then went on to push their broadband service, which gave me a chuckle, because we get our broadband from them already.

She then informed me that we actually got basic cable (almopst 60 channels) included with our broadband service.

Oh? Now THAT was news to me. We've had the broadband here for nearly two years, and it never occured to either me or my fiance to try plugging the coax into the back of the TV (yes, we do have one - for Videos and DVDs).

I mentioned it to my gal later that day, and she was equally surprised. We both then stared at the box in the living room suspisciously for a moment, then got on to reading Nat Geo and Sci-Am.

Two weeks later, we actually got around to plugging the cable into the back of the TV. For a half hour, we sat stuporously flicking through 60 whole channels of.... Stuff we had no interest in. We turned the thing off and went to the pool for a swim.

In the month and a half since we plugged the cable into the back of the TV, I think we've watched a total of 5, maybe 7 hours of TV.

Are we freaks? Out of step with the pop culture? Or are there more and more people out there who could really care less if they had cable? Even if it's free?

<<It seems sad, if thats all you know how to do to pass the time.>>

YES! This is all I do. I never travel, get out, I do not even run a business! This was my point exactly - all I do all day is watch television. One day I hope I can spend more time rollerblading like you! :)

<<A majority of my time is spent either working on my computer>>

Now that to me is sad! Back to my question. Are there any men who do not watch any sports at all?

But I am seriously interested - Are there men who do not watch any sports on television (other than Macro)?

Well, aside from the folks who have already answered here, my boyfriend doesn't. Hell, if we're out and a bar has a sports game on the tv, he'll ask the bartender if they'll turn it off...

mfishy, I think you've got your answer. There are.

I'm seriously interested - did you really think that there were two possible answers to the question, "yes" and "no"?

digitalghost <<So when I want to watch a game now I watch little league baseball or football and as long as the parents are quiet I can watch kids play for the pure enjoyment of the sport.>>

The Little League World Series is one of my favorite tv events all year. Sitting in the stands watching my nephew play baseball is second, only because of the horrible obnoxious parents. One parent, whose very nice son was on my nephew's team for several years, spent games berating his little boy and once threatened a tiny shortstop on an opposing team for an errant throw. Parents at Little League games should be seen and not heard. The horrid parents beget the horrid professional athletes.

I'm sorry, I did not see your response, Macro. I was distracted by a Ricki Lake re-run blaring from the tube. Seems this grandmother has resorted to prostitution as her husband is not buying her the jewelry she desires. Wait...I think there is gonna be a fight...Damn! They broke it up.

Anyway, this thread has really been inspirational to me. I am giving up my season tix to the Magic to some poor sap who would rather watch NBA courtside than play on the Internet or go for walks in the park. I have also decided to cancel the superbowl party and dedicate that Sunday to spending more quality time on the web, chatting with friends and reading about linux. I may go rollerblading as well.

Life without NBA League Pass and the NFL network is boring. Sports Center 3 times a day plus The Best Damn Sports Show Period @ 11 and I am a happy man. Is TV relevant anymore? Come on now!

I cannot live without sports... seriously. If I couldn't watch SportsCenter twice a day, I'd freak.

Did you know that baseball's mini-camps have already started!? Counting down the days to Opening Day.

It sucks that football only has 2 more games left... God I love football.

Pro basketball sucks, unless you are courtside (or LeBron, KG, Steve Nash, or classic '80s games are on). College on the other hand rules the world.

The Bruins (with the rest of the NHL) are *sniff* gone for the year. I miss legalized fighting.

mfishy, I'm with you dude. Sit me in front of the TV. Give me Springer, give me MLB, give me the Eukenuba Championship... PLEASE! I do read quite often (Sports Illustrated, Maxim, and "Positively 5th Street" count right?), but I'd much rather watch a game.

OK, Macro, since this seems unbelievably important to you, yes, I understand that you and other men do not watch sports and that a yes and a no is not possible.

Thanks for all the stickies/emails - I am glad some of you guys appreciated the joking in the midst of a well...errr...forget it :)

mfishy,

I'm female, therefore I'm making up for some of the men who aren't watching sports. I discovered fantasy football this season (won mah league, I did) and decided that I loved football. Although, I really only love it when I can follow the stats of my players. Is that true love or just conditional fantasy love?

Well, I think the question has been definitively answered.

While for many, TV isn't all that relevant anymore, overall, it is very certainly relevant.

After all, the mere question spawned one of the longest foo-fights I've ever seen.

Tv's relevance may be related more to polarization than to actual "relevance".

<<A majority of my time is spent either working on my computer or spending time with my four year old.>>

Now that to me is sad!

Yes it is quite sad, imagine a father wanting to spend time with his kid and at the same time be concerned enough to work relentlessly so that someday his kid can go to a college that doesn't have the word community in it. I also exercise everyday, wow, at least the athletes you dedicate your life to watching never do that or you would have to mock them also.

I teach summer night classes to underprivileged kids at the local college and volunteer at the meals on wheels for the elderly when I get the time. So yes, I do think people who have found nothing better to do with their lives but sit and watch hundreds of hours of people they don't even know throwing balls around on TV sad. I believe people who spend hundreds of hours watching sports on TV who can't comprehend that other people don't, even sadder.

What if we're watching people we know playing sports on tv? Is that less sad? :)

By the way, way to misinterpret. The poster (can't remember who) was saying it was sad spending all the time on the computer, not with the four year old. Like anyone would say that. Sheesh.

Anyway, we all have hobbies - for some of us, they include tv; for some of us, they don't.

So... can we start arguing about the BBC again - and how great it is to have some relevant, high quality, non-commercially-biased television (and radio) channels that you pay for up front instead of having to finance by sitting through inane adverts?

Which programmes on commercial television channels are better than Question Time?

I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with a college which has the word "community" in its name. Many community colleges in this country (the US, in case you aren't from "here") provide a high-quality education at a relatively lower cost. Talk about an "elitist" attitude! Some of the biggest bozos I know got their college degrees at "big name/big game/big money" institutions. And some of the best businessmen I know attended community colleges in various areas of this country.

That sort of slap isn't called for at all.... and no, I don't have any relationship to the chancellor or whatever of any local community college - as it happens, we don't have one here.... of course, back on topic, we don't have any "local" tv stations either.

>> and that a yes and a no is not possible.
Huh?

I wasn't looking for your "understanding" that some men don't watch TV. Anybody would have understood that from the posts. I wanted to know if you really believed there was a chance that no man would reply to say they didn't watch sports. I was hoping you'd answer that as candidly as others have answered your question. Simple, but I'll rephrase it: Did you really think they'd be a big silence with no men posting that they didn't watch sport? (It's kinda interesting to get an idea of a sports fan's perspective of the world).

>> Anyway, we all have hobbies - for some of us, they include tv; for some of us, they don't.
Absolutely. But a lot of the TV watching folk seem to take it as a personal insult that some don't find it as exciting/entertaining as they do.

>> instead of having to finance by sitting through inane adverts
There seem to be some people kidding themselves that there aren't commercials on BBC. I've no idea how that myth started. Or maybe they've just gotten so used to blanking out the house ads that they don't "see" them anymore.

>> Which programmes on commercial television channels are better than Question Time?
None. Which is why I sometimes record and watch it. (I've never said I don't ever watch TV... just that most TV is rubbish, the BBC is not unbiased, soaps and sports don't interest me etc.)
