Distorted in what way(s)? What are you using to create the pdf files?

I got a PDF icon on in my toolbar in word; it gets very pixelized and its edges are not smooth at all.

Does the pdf icom bring up Acrobat PDFMaker? If so, what creation option do you have checked? Use Acrobat Distiller and make sure you correctly optimise for print or screen (or whatever - see the dropdown list) under print via Distiller's printer.

This gets good results for me.

We've resorted to going from Word -> Illustrator -> PDF

I don't have any problems.

You should also have a "Adobe PDF" pull down menu. Pull that down and select "Change Conversion Settings". Select the Image tab. You'll find some settings in there to change the image quality.

Or you could try using OpenOffice, which has a built-in facility to export to PDF.
