Bought my copy of the new Band Aid single a few days ago - big thumbs up :)

I like it - its much more modern than the first and I enjoyed the rap bit in the middle. I'm also a huge fan of U2, Travis, and the Darkness which helps.

It’s different from the original so I don't think a straight comparison would be fair. I like both.

I bought an acetate version of "Do they know it's Christmas" from a Radio 1 D.J. (UK) when the original came out (20 years ago, God I'm getting old) at a charity disco. Hand written labels and about twice the weight of a normal 45.

Should have had it on eBay...

The first one was pretty dire, this latest one is even worse. I was forced to watch the video for it a few nights ago because I was too lazy to go and get the remote. It was brain numbing, as for the bit where the guy talks is that because unlike the rest of them he admits he can't sing?

There is no logical reason to buy this abysmal recording, if you want to give money to a charity you don't need an excuse - do it direct.

Anyway the track record of band-aid does not necessarily lead one to believe that the money will have any effect on the core problem.

I think the whole excercise is more about egos than good work.

That's interesting as I have it on acetate too - 7". Mine is blank - no paper label - and one sided. I bought this from a record dealer about 10-11 years ago and paid three figures for it then.

This was one of only five that were pressed in the studio after the recording was done. The record dealer got this copy from the sound engineer who actually pressed them, along with some other memorabilia from the session.

I bought the disc as an Xmas present for my partner. When we split up I made sure that it came with me, for, whilst I may not like the song, I do love the uniqueness of the disc..;-)

Mine's a 7" (record!) as well Syzygy.

I bought mine when Radio 1 did a 24 hour charity broadcast from all around the UK. Can't remember the name of the DJ who came to Dungannon, N. Ireland (where I'm from) but he auctioned it off at about 3am. I bought it for 15 quid and kept it under my shirt until I staggered out of the hotel at about 8am.

Nice story, giggle, and your version of the acetate cost £185 less than mine. You certainly got a bargain there...

Methinks that you'll want to hold onto your copy for a few more years yet. Perhaps wait until the next wave of Band-Aid euphoria in five year's time, or even 25 years after that. Alternatively, I'll give you a score* for it now..;-)

Better or worse than Band Aid 2?

Now I'm glad you mentioned that Ronin, I was beginning to think I imagined Band Aid 2.

I watched a documentary on TV the other night about the making of this new one, and they showed lots of clips of the original. No one uttered a single word about the second one (circa 1989/1990?). If I remember correctly Matt Goss sang the 'Bono' line. I actually quite liked this version, it was more upbeat, a bit cheesy and very Stock, Aitken and Waterman.
