Unplugging from Technology

We've all felt like we need a break. Take one!

Most of us probably spend a little too much time in front of the monitor or XBox or some other techno gadget. Be sure to get your sanity breaks on a regular basis, you might find enjoyment in the simplist things.

Experts Urge People to Unplug Occasionally [biz.yahoo.com]

Do you get away often enough or are you pretty much always accessible via email, IM, cell phone, etc.? Sometimes I feel my hip vibrate when my cell phone is laying on the counter. That's a sure sign to turn it off and get away for a day or two!

I refuse to carry a mobile or even own one just for that reason. The amount of times Ive been phoned just to talk over some obscure point that could waited till teh next day.

Blackberries have gained a certain level of interest from me though....

*shrug* I just spent two weeks elk hunting. Without electricity period (okay, the friend fired up his generator for an hour a night.... but there's no net access where he lives!) I didn't take my laptop. I got along fine.

I may spend my life at the machine, but I don't go into stasis shock without it....

We go down to Mount Katahdin (Baxter State Park) in Maine to get away from it all. I think they have the death penalty for using a cell phone in the park, or at least the ranger's make you think thats the case :)

Yes its nice to get away from technology for a while. These days with USB keys, MP3 players, camera memory cards etc, the average person has half a terabyte strapped to their body most of the time.

Some days I feel more borg than human.

I go away for long periods about two or three times a year. For the first two days I'm gone, I feel anxious without my laptop. For the first two days after I get back home I can't stand to look at it.

I am accused of being a cell phone addict. The only time I'm not reachable by cell (or making calls myself) is when I'm in the air on a plane.

>>when I'm in the air on a plane

Glad you made yourself clear. Otherwise I would have assumed astral projection. :)

Opposite 100% of chrisnrae: the only time I AM reachable by cell is if you let me know ahead of time that you might need to call me.... AND if I think it's important that you get hold of me when I'm out somewhere.

It's a convenience FOR ME. Period. I use it for emergencies, which means practically never. I have 30 minutes a month free. I haven't used more than 5 minutes a month in the 6 years I've had the damn thing. I've used roaming about 3 times. I've used directory service/auto connect twice (I have local phone books everywhere).

I have actually used it a couple of times for more or less emergencies - nothing life or death, just "discomfortable". (Of course, I also won't bother to answer my home phone unless it's someone I really need to talk to. That's why I have an answering machine. I also have an answering machine online when I'm dialed up - so if people want to talk to me, they HAVE TO LEAVE A MESSAGE. I am not at ANYONE'S beck and "call"....)

Contrariwise, I have a thriving email contact system. I infinitely prefer email.... and those who can't be bothered to read their email, but expect me to answer the phone, BE WARNED! The chances are REALLY good that we will never "talk"....

Man, I'm out visiting the folks right now (just for dinner). They live out in the countryside where my cel doesn't work and dial up is the only option.

Wihout my broadband and cel, I feel... disconnected.

On the plus side, there's the satelite TV...

BUT, I have been known to head out for the day and "accidentally" forget my cel-phone on the kitchen counter, and "accidentally" run into a friend and blow hours at a certain bohemian cafe playing intensely competitive cribbage.

I've also been known to dust off the tool belt and go to work in rural construction for week-long stints. For the express purpose of reminding myself what it's like to really "work" for a dollar. Nothing like hard days and heavy labor to remind one that the stress of the keyboard is actually a cushy gig.

It's all about perspective.

After verbally sparring all day Friday and Saturday over an e-com deal, I felt the need to unplug today. Saddled up a 3 year-old Paint and let her hit her stride. No phone, no PC, just me and a horse and miles of dirt road.

Wish I could do that right now, dg. Unfortunately, we have a few inches of snow over some ice, MY paint would be in trouble.... he's a lot older than yours, um lessee.... 14....

My girlfriend has one of those. I swear in the next week I'm going to be throwing the damn thing out of the Window.

And the Blackberry will be following her ;-)

I totally subscribe to the whole "taking a break" theory. And it's not just for your own benefit.

LMAO Lawman.

>>> the only time I AM reachable by cell is if you let me know ahead of time that you might need to call me

LOL - I am regularly dragged out of bed by cell phone calls. Wish I had the willpower to not answer, but I don't. Half the webmaster world having my phone number probably doesn't help ;).

>>> blackberry

I actually may get one of those. Got to play with one quite a bit this last week and really liked it. Lord help me. ;)
