British scientists seeking to protect the environment have designed a biodegradable mobile phone cover that breaks down in soil when discarded and sprouts a flower from a seed embedded inside the case.

From here [story.news.yahoo.com].

Right now only sunflowers sprout, but they're also working on poppies and roses.

How does it know when it's been discarded? Mine would probably sprout a forest in the bottom of my bag.

Designers have reassured the wary user that the seed, implanted in a tiny transparent window, only germinates when the phone cover is discarded.

This was discussed on the radio here. It was suggested that it would indicate that it is time to clean your bag when it starts to sprout.

Are they phones, or just phone covers...

He said he hoped the covers would hit the market next year, but did not say how much they might cost.

Nevermind, they're just covers.

Great idea! I'll go out and get one of these fancy new covers and put my old one in the trash!

Hang on a minute... ;)
