It is indeed a sad day. John Peel was the doyen of the radio and beyond; the champion of the unheard of groups and the unplayed talents. John Peel introduced to the music-listening public more new singers, bands and styles of music than anyone could ever appreciate.

A favourite of mine through his BBC Radio 4 show "Home Truths", he made interesting the mundane, everyday existence of our lives; he revelled in the rich human tapestry that is life itself - it's ups and downs, it's happy and sad times, family drama's and mind-blowing experiences. Real life, and a celebration of all that it entails - this was John Peel at his best - everyman exemplified.

An oak tree among mere saplings.

As I was just a moment ago reminded, in listening to his obituary at the BBC online, John Peel was the discoverer and/or champion of - among many others - Pink Floyd, T-Rex, The Ramones, The Smiths, Oasis, Manic Street Preachers, and the White Stripes...The list is endless.

To quote: "He was the single most influential figure in British pop music..."

Damned shame - when I was a young'n I used to listen to his show with my finger primed on the record button - I can't even begin to describe how much new and interesting music he exposed me to.

I will miss him dearly

He was an inspiration to everyone who heard him. Variety truly is the spice of life and he proved it every show.

Rest in peace

Thats a great loss, he was one of the few DJ's where music and not image mattered a real rarity.

Bet you didnt know though he was standing in the doorway of the Texas book dep when Kennedy was assainated, there are even photos showing him there.

The BBC have just put up a tribute [news.bbc.co.uk] to John Peel in pictures, sound & vision.

For anyone unfamiliar with John Peel, why not take a look?
