This puts me in the 'most normal' category for the fooies (or what's the membership here called? hopefully not misspelled 'phooeys'!), which might be a tiny bit scary.

Anyways, along the lines of Greenleaves' suggestion, why might blue spanner be such a common result for a typical phooie?

the case for blue

Look at where you are right now. Two blue bars for a header, blue in the footer, and if anything here could be described as a 'tool', it's the 'Post' buttons up there on top, which are blue.

Blue is one of the most common colors on the web as a background, and is really easy to work with.

Blue rhymes with foo.

Fooies aren't frustrated, 'break - it' type folks, but confident, affirming people; blue is also the color of trust. Blue is relaxed. Foo is the 'watercooler', and watercoolers are typically blue.

The case for spanner

A spanner is very much a protocol-oriented device. You either have to pick the right spanner to fit the bolt you're turning, or adjust the spanner for the proper fit. Much moreso than a hammer; significantly moreso than a screwdriver. Few occupations involve operating within protocols as much as that of webpeople.

You use a spanner when you're in an environment that contains nuts.
