What's the name of this classic film?

I can't remember...

The film is black and white - I'm sure. I've no idea who was in it; couldn't tell you whether it was American or British made. No idea whether it was 40's or early 50's.

The storyline revolves around the interactions of a group of people thrown together on a cruise liner. The ship is sailing through the night and seemingly shrouded in fog (I think). The film focuses on the interactions of the group based on class, general attitudes and differing social and worldly perspectives, etc, etc.

Sounds pretty dull until it is revealed (to both the cast and the audience I think) that the rag-tag bunch are in fact all dead and the liner is cruising its way through eternity.

Don't think I've seen this film in at least 15 years or more, however, in having a discussion in the office this morning we were struck by how much this film reminded us of our workplace..;-)

What is this film called?

No, my old movie buff friend says it wasn't Ship of Fools, but another movie with, she thinks, Cecil Calloway.

I don't think Ship of Fools is the Title.

In SOFs, Simone Signoret played the part of a drug addicted countessa who fell in love with the ships Captain while aboard the life boat.

The one the poster is referring to has all those aboard the ship somewhat ignorant of their place in life...as in dead.

There was also one portly man whose job it was to orientat the new arrivals.

There was one individual (John "?") who figured it out and part of the plot dealt with his, (as well as others) acceptance of death.

There was also a 'couple' who I believe were spies.

Oh, and when they 'passed' they exited this room where most of the film took place, and disappeared on deck.

The very end of the movie had the girl (I believe) on the deck when her honey came out to 'bring her back'.

You know, I can see all the actors and not a darn name is coming in here.....

Wow, almost sounds like a Hitchcock film. Not the movie I was thinking of.

It's not Ship of Fools.

Pedanticist's description sounds accurate, although I don't really recall any detail of the film now, just it's overall story line.

I think we're getting close though...

Feb 10 05:00 AM Between Two Worlds - (1944)
Passengers on a luxury liner realize they are en route to the afterlife. John Garfield, Edmund Gwenn, Eleanor Parker. D:Edward A. Blatt. BW CC 112 m

John Garfield was the one I was thinking of and of course, the portly one would be Edmund Gwenn.

Found a link that says it will be playing on TCM at 10:00 AM on 12/8 just in case you want to see it again

Syzygy, I think you might just need a different job. Sounds dreadful, hope you get to "pass" on ;)

Between two worlds; this is surely it although the title sounds somewhat abstract to my vague memories.

Will have to put this on my Christmas list and see if anyone can find me a copy. As I don't do cable nor satellite, and haven't switched on the TV in many months (with only five terrestrial UK channels there is little point) a copy on dvd or video must now be sought.

Thanks all, especially pedanticist, for identifying it - much appreciated.

Didn't know the background to the film either - you live and learn (or sail on..;-)

Or buy "The Others" instead. Sounds like the same story.

The Others [google.com]:

Plot Outline: A woman who lives in a darkened old house with her two photosensitive children becomes convinced that her family home is haunted.

Great film The Others - have watched it several times - but it doesn't relate I'm afraid.

Cheers nonetheless

Remember a TV play like this in the 70's..2 couples in "back and white" cottage ( would have written "half timbered" but the ""cousins and the "ozzies" think it means mini traveller ;)..they keep hearing "haunted noises" etc and outside is sort of gone/nowhere ..they are geeting more and more terrified of the ghosts ..turns out they died on the drive down there or something and the ghosts are the "alive people" ..outside as life goes on ..

no idea of the name ..

Well, I didn't want to give away the ending but...

Yup, I appreciate the point, elgumbo, and whilst the plots in both revolve in general terms around the theme of the dead believing they're still living, you might as well say that all war films (see current active thread) are the same because the theme is, well, war..;-)

Cheers,
