Love it or hate it?

I LOOOOOVE the stuff.

Used to be fed it on crustless toast as a nipper, now I eat it daily or as often as I can.

So what about you, does it cause you to back away slowly, shoulders arched and teeth grit, or do you eat it with a spoon when no one is looking?

...vegemite jar on the way in the post...Any suggestions on the best serving method?

Take a plastic bin liner and three freezer bags, place the pot of vegemite inside one of the freezer bags tie it tightly and seal with one of those wire ties. Repeat this with the other two bags then put the thrice wrapped jar into the bin liner and tie it tightly in a knot. Place the whole thing in a dustbin and leave it outside of the house with all the other rubbish.

Macguru, I'm not just impressed that you like the stuff, I'm amazed! Where did you get it?! I've searched every food shop in the city here with no success, but if I can get it in Montreal I might be able to pick some up next time I have to go there...

All this discussion has reawakened the suppressed cravings. But with no Marmite around, I had to settle for another, more local delicacy: poutine [webmasterworld.com]!

>>Where did you get it?!

I got a small Marmite jar at "Les Douceurs du Marché" at the Atwater public market for 19.99$.ca. They sell everyting at an outrageous price over there, but they always have most of all those exotic items in stock. Since it's on my way home near the bike path, I just had to try this stuff.

How much is a jar of Marmite in UK?

I get two jars of Vegemite sent over almost monthly from NZ to Sweden :)

It's great for hangovers and you haven't lived until you've had a vegemite and chip sandwich (vegemite and crisps for those in the UK).

Marmite pales in comparison.

Oh yeah, forgot about those. Ever tried *mite and "Fish & Chip" type chips? Mmmm...

I used to get Vegemite and Sultana sandwiches in my school lunch. *mite and Sour Cream go together well.

Woz that is making me feel ill.

It may be unAustralian to say so, but I can't stand any of the *mites. So I guess I am not a happy little vegemite then!

Please do come back to us once you've actually tasted this, well, stuff...

Maybe I wasn't clear. I've tried (and regularly consume on toast) marmite, but have never tried vegemite.

Best thing ever: Telling tourists Vegemite is meant to be eaten by the big spoonful- then watching the expression on there face when it hits their tongue.

Well it aint 20 dollars! about £1.50 for the smaller jars, £3-4 for the giant ones.

Ah, but I think $20 Canadian is only about £1.50 UK. ;)

Current exchange (Yahoo Finance) is £1 BP - $2.5ish CD. So $20 is still is a hell of a lot to pay for a samll jar!

Infact the idea of shipping it is becoming a very attractive prospect.....

Marmite and all other 'mites' should be shipped out to the Mariana Trench [marianatrench.com] then dumped...

;-)

and another 'yuk' for good measure...

OK, so I emailed Unilever Bestfoods UK Limited to enquire about getting the necessary permissions to use the Marmite brand name and relevant logos on a website...

They've told me to put my proposal in writing, so I'll be posting that off tomorrow morning :)

Shipping within the EU is very cheap, and isn't much more to the US and Canada...

Any thoughts?

I can't believe people eat that stuff. I found a jar in a cubboard of an apartment I moved into once. I thought it was shoe polish or something. Then a friend said it was food from Australia. I was shocked and amazed. I don't think I could drink enough Fosters to make me consider trying some.
As for Poutine, now that is something else.

Well, I also won't make popcorn without sprinkling brewers yeast on it, and I've always had a serious weakness for salty snacks... so I guess it was really predestined that I'd rather like the *mite family of products.
