"The capsule has suffered extensive damage. It has broken apart on the desert floor," said an official on NASA TV. "Hopefully, there will be enough evidence to see what went wrong. Whether there will be enough science left inside remains to be seen."

Let's hope that there is at least some material to be salvaged that can give the insights we were looking for...

mattglet:

Nope. But it was one HELL of a spectacular sight! Almost the scary-spectacular kind, y'know?

Had a lot of people out with horses etc. hunting for pieces all day, don't yet know what they found if anything....

Yeah, I would be a little freaked out about it. Did you guys have any warning?

I didn't see any footage of it, so not sure if anyone got it on tape or not.

No warning - we were just outside late because the weather was so gorgeous. Our house sits under the brow of a hill, so we didn't "watch" it all the way down - it "disappeared" behind the hill in about 5 seconds.

At first we thought it was a huge meteorite (like one I saw a full 6 seconds in the sky a year ago on my way to work - and which was actually "space junk") - but it was pretty extreme even for a LARGE meteorite, and the next day of course we heard what really happened.
