I was at a restaurant/bar last night and bar tender took 5 mins to fill a healthy shot glass full of bitters (the regulator only allows a drop at a time to come out), and then she dropped it back like it were water.

I found it repulsive and beautiful all at once.

Um, okay...

So, what are "bitters?"

Sorry if that's dumb, never heard of them in Oregon!

i've had bitters in club soda to aide a hangover--barmaid must have been really hungover.

i've been behind a bar for a dozen years, never seen anyone do a shot of bitters.

Most interesting thing? That someone still makes absinthe....

I'm ashamed to say, that in my younger, carousing days, I took advantage of the horrid taste of bitters. On a bet, and racing to 10 shots, I was given the choice of choosing my opponent's poison. He chose Tequila for me, I chose bitters for him. The deal was, "any liquid behind the bar".

Needless to say, slamming shots of bitters is an unpleasant task. But my second choice was dry Vermouth...

I still have some :o

Bitter is a type of beer in the UK. Knock back 5 of those quickly and I would be impressed. :)

A "true" beer apparantly =p

Absinthe is lethal, still popular in many European countries.

I have used the hangover cure also. Bitters on a slice of lemon. It has been a long time since then. Seems like it worked primarily by giving your body something more immediate to worry about.

I used to pick gin as the shot for some victims - but bitters wins hands down.

Absinthe rocks! Its got wormwood (absinthium) in it.
It knocks your brain sideways if you drink enough.
It can cause you to hallucinate as well.

Much fun
