Do I need to see the first one beforehand?

I'm off to see this tomorrow.

I never got around to seeing the first movie - should I get that out on DVD tonight, or can the 2nd movie be viewed without having seen the first one?

You don't need to but I would. The first one was good, very good, but II is phenomenal. If you like action flicks, Bourne Supremacy is really good as well.

You have to rent Bourne Identity, from what I hear, the sequel is a continuation from it.

Yeah, that one is a continuation. FWIW, both of these movies are far better in the theater.

Yeah thanks guys, and I appreciate that movies are always better in the cinema, but neither of those two are still in the cinema now the sequels have come out.

I still enjoyed the first Spiderman movie on DVD last night though ;-)
