Rocket plane SpaceShipOne reached an altitude above 62.5 miles (100 km)

It is the first private manned spaceflight in history.

They just need to take two into space to win the X Prize, but it looks like they will do it with ease.

Well done Rutan and Allen! I hope they make the second flight. This is a huge step forward... especially as NASA seem to have given up on manned missions.

Yep, congratulations to the SpaceShipOne crew for a great achievement! I'm looking forward to them getting the Ansari X-Prize, which surely is like taking candy from a kid :)

You've got to know NASA is watching this closely. I glimpsed a headline the other day about them (NASA) possibly sponsoring a similar challenge/prize.
