Okay - I know these are not the best but I need to order a PC today for a family friend in the USA for around $600. The two computers below look similar in spec - which one is better? They have 512mb memory and a nice 80gig drive...

Compaq Computer [walmart.com] or Emachines Computer? [walmart.com]

I don't have time to build my own and need a new computer shipped asap.....

Please - any constructive help will be most appreciated!

It's hard to say w/out knowing what your friend intends on doing with it - in that price range, I'd spec out the Dell Dimension 2400 (if I had to go the one stop shop/support route):

[www1.us.dell.com...]

That box is moderately upgradeable, and has a P4 as it's base, not the infinitely inferior Celeron.

I would stay away from Emachines desktops. Try and see what Dell are offering.

Thanks to both of you... The Dell Dimension 2400 can be configured to a similar spec as the above for around $699 - which is great value for money.
