NEW YORK (AP) -- Phish, the Vermont-based jam band whose legions of dedicated fans made them one of the United States' top touring acts, announced Tuesday that they were breaking up.
Thank God.

As for the "hippie" scene, the thought of hanging out and drinking pale ales with a bunch of non-violent, generally kind folks looking to enjoy themselves is a heck of a lot more appealing to me than the alternatives - chicks with black lipstick, wannabe gangstas, the self important "square black glasses" types, heavy metal moshers, bumpin and grindin' suburban teenie boppers, and the rest...
To each his own i guess...
I like Phish. Oh, and I learned how to panhandle in Eugene :)
As long as they don't pull a KISS style "this time we're REALLY leaving" act, then I say give them their due, and let'em R.I.P.

Yes. At least when he's sober.

Yes. This may sound funny, but in a way, Phish is to music as WebmasterWorld is to others forums. There is a real sense of community between the band and the fans and within the fans. Here's just a few examples...
example:
In the summer of 2000, Phish put on of their festivals at the Oswego airport in NY. 80,000+ fans together for 3 days in the hot sun in 90+degrees. There was no violence. I never saw a fight, I never heard about a fight the whole weekend, I didn't read about any fights on the internet when I got home.
The very next weekend, at the same location, same weather, about the same amount people. There were fights, girls were raped, and utter chaos as people set fire to their own surroundings.
example:
At another festival in the everglades in south Florida. Phish built basically a city for the weekend out of a cow pasture. There were roads, and street signs, etc. Again, 80,000 people. As you walked down these roads, you COULD NOT find one piece of garbage. People even through their cigarette butts into the cans provided on the side of the road.
example:
After a show in the parking lot hanging out partying. We spot a pretty young girl walking (and swerving) totally naked. Within seconds, a guy rushes up to her, covers her in a blanket, and leads her back from the way she came.
I know I'm rambling, but sometimes I take the "it's easy to make fun of Phish and it's fans" a little personal. What Phish did was truly special and the people who were a part of it were very lucky. Peace, people:)
Had a good time both times. Once dragged along by a roommate in college...once I went voluntarily;) They were very talented musicians, and more than anything could "freestyle" extremely well together.
...picture a bunch of muddy hippies sliding down a large grass hill after a large thunderstorm...priceless;)
