I've seen it written both ways and I'm wondering what the overall consensus is here.

I guess both are acceptable?

Personally, I prefer Website. It looks nicer and saves a keystroke (or is it 'key stroke'?).

I also prefer Website. Reason being that a website is a complete 'thing' IMO.

Word spellchecker prefers 'Webster' ;)

I go for website too but I don't think there's a right or wrong answer mainly. Looking around I tend to see more 'website' than 'web site' though...

Technically we have two options: "Web site" and "website" (not "Website"). Both are equally correct and can be used. Just be consistent. The use of "website" is becoming more and more common. It is, however, not proper to capitalize the word "website" in the middle of a sentence. Here's the reason why:

Initially, these sites where called "World Wide Web sites". But, that seemed like a really long and cumbersome phrase to use, so it was quickly shortened to just "Web site", simply because everyone referred to "the World Wide Web" as just "the Web". The word "Web", capitalized, obviously signifies a proper name (just like Internet should be capitalized). Now, it is not uncommon for proper names (or even abbreviations) to lose their "status" as the words become more and more common. Just think about words like laser, scuba, homepage, online, and printout. Likewise, "website" seems to be gaining ground over "Web site". But, both are equally ok to use.

Merriam-Webster only lists the "2-word" version:

Dictionary.com lists the two-word version, but gives the one-word version as an alternative...

I'd have to agree with Google:

http://www.google.com/search?q="web+site"
Did you mean: "website" [google.com]

:)

So, webmaster rather than web master too, then?

I've always thought "webmaster" - only spiders are "web masters"?

I have often used that site as the final arbiter of a spelling decision.

Waaay back before the millenium[sic], I had to spell "millenium" and I "spell checked" it by doing a G search. Getting about 2 million or so hits for "millenium" I figured, hey good enough for me if it's good enough for G! Sigh... if only I had looked to see the nine million results for "millennium" I might have saved myself the grand that mistake cost. (Or had I known about google-fight.)

There was a night club near here called "milenium", for a year or so, around 2000. I guess they had the same problem.
