That's a lovely name, Naoisiu. I've never heard of it, I'm afraid. Is it pronounced neesh-oo? Is it realated to Naoise, or another form of that name? If so it is very difficult to write a pronunciation for the "aoi". Ostensibly, Naoise can be pronounced nee-sha, but unlike with the english pronunciation, the "ee" part here does not mean that your mouth makes a smile, instead, your lips should be pursed, your cheeks should be taut and the "aoi" sound comes from behind the teeth. Gaelic is not an easy language to speak or pronounce (or describe how to pronounce for that matter) but at least people will remember you, not least, because of your original name.

:) Yes, it is Naoise in fact. Naoisiu is a more traditional Gaelic spelling (which I truly only learned a couple of years ago when I finally made it back home after a .. long time) - The iu emphasises an 'uh' sound at the end instead of an 'aa'. Think of it as the u in 'must'.

I've never had anyone in Ireland or elsewhere who has commented on the aoi pronounciation before. Reading it from a book is just plain confusing. I'm sure I don't have the subtlties quite right myself, so no worries if anybody else misses the mark ;)

I do have some Irish speaking friends though, so when I'm home next I'll start bugging them about the details.

Thanks for that. I don't know why but I thought you had an accent on the u which is why I said 'oo' instead of the softer 'uh'. With regard to the pronunciation, that is my own take on it, others may differ, but it is a sound that you don't get in English. So is your name Naoise or Naoisiu? Was it Naoise to begin with and did you change it?

My birth certificate is for Naoise :)

I don't know that my parents even knew of a more traditional spelling - I learned it recently from someone else. I think things are confusing enough without adding yet another vowel - besides, I'm over being picky about people getting my name right, and life is easier now ;)

I think I'll email my little brother and ask him about the accent above the u, he should be able to figure that out... he takes Irish in school and his father speaks a little. Better than my Canadian French I'm sure..

On the subject of Irish names and pronunciations, you should try having the surname "Heraghty". Even about 75% of Irish people get it wrong.

I meant that I had misread it, there's no reason for there to be an accent on the u, it was my mistake, so don't bother your brother. As names go, Naoise is a great one with a great history. When you first asked people to guess your name, and others thought of things like "Fy-ver" etc. I thought your name sounded similar to fiver. The closest I could think of was "fadhb", pronounced "fibe", but meaning "problem", so I reckon you got off fairly lightly. Michael, with regards to surnames, just don't get me started.

Getting back on topic (the Tabke/Tabkey pronunciation debate). When Microsoft took Mike Rowesoft to court because his name sounded like their patented product, did they win? Could Brett claim a dubious patent on the "tabkey" as it sounds like his surname? Only kidding, obviously.Anyway, enough waffling, was there a specific reason the original poster wanted to know the proper pronunciation (to ask for his autograph, for example) or was it just one of those things?

Yes they did. Mike Rowe had to handover the domain. But in return, MS give him some free stuff (ie. free xbox, pass to meet Bill Gates etc.)

So its pretty equal I guess.

Thanks for that Sid. I wasn't actually serious about the court case and patenting, nor was I serious about Brett changing his middle name to altke (as alt and tab complement each other), nor did I think that Brett should change his name to a symbol (a forward arrow on top of a back arrow), akin to Prince, but I do think his name is particularly apt given his profession. On a similar note, how do you pronounce the name 'rfgdxm1'?;)
