Building a searchable directory based on a database...

... sadly I don't know my SQL from my elbow!

Hi,

Didn't know where else to ask...

I've been considering setting up a (small) directory recently, filled with things I personally have found on the net and find very useful/amusing/distracting/etc.

I would like to make this directory searchable, and also easily updatable (by me and whoever else I rope in) by adding entries to a database.

Sadly, although I am fluent in the simple stuff (XHTML/CSS/Javascript et al), when it comes to web-based databases I don't have a clue.

Is this something that would be fairly easy (though I like a challenge for learning experience!) and could someone point me in the rough direction in terms of having a database and extracting its contents into a nice template as necessary?

I have SQL, PHPMyAdmin and all that jazz, but I have absolutely no idea what to do with it all :P

Thanks,

James.

Firstly, try looking through www.hotscripts.com

There are often a lot of free scripts to download, and learn from (where I started!) but there are also lots of good tutorials to follow.

If you do get stuck on a particular problem when following a tutorial, there is a very active PHP Forum [webmasterworld.com] where you will be able to get help. ;)

Here are some previous threads on Directory Software:
