Hey all,
I am building a server for my network but have experienced some problems. The server I am building had to be able to cope with high load applications so I built it to a fairly high spec.

I used the nviada nforce board, amd athlon 3000 processor and 4x512 meg ram. (pc2300)
Now for the problem...

I thouht it would be simple, slot the ram in fire it up, no chance, it refuses to boot the OS (suse linux) with more than one slot of ram inserted. The board is capable of ruunning 3gig. It does however go through the boot up sceens, than the lilo options page, but when it goes to boot the os, the screen goes blank. If I use only one bar of ram (512meg) it boots fine.

¦a¦ ¦b¦ ¦c¦ ¦d¦

the above represents by dims, on further reading of the manual I read about "duel channel technology" whereby sim a and b are one channel and c and d are the pother channel. so to make this work you must have at least one bar of memory in a or b and one in c or d. It goes further by saying that to use 4 bars of ran you must have a double sided bar in a and b but c and d must be single sided. I have tried various versions of possible combinations but can't get it to boot, anyone else ever experienced the same problem or have ay ideas what I can do.

I have tried with pc3200 and pc2100 same result for each type of memory.

Thanks in advance.

Mack.

Yes, I've had a similar situation a couple of times, though on far older systems, not for servers, and not linux. First time, it was one stick of the RAM that was bad. Second time it was that the slot itself was bad.
