I don't want to spend a fortune on something which is very basic like a IM in the office. I would want something which has central amin control over add/delete user (This ICQ does not has)and does not connect to the Internet.
Should have added - I am don't want peer to peer, it should be similar to ICQ groupware but Admin should be able to add users from the server rather than client searching and adding users.
is open source and incredibly configurable. Of course you have to put it all together ;-)

I looked into Jabber...it looks very complicated - not as easy as ICQ Groupware :( any other alternative?

Lotus Sametime works great for us. We use it for AIM/Instant messaging as well as whiteboard/webex type stuff.
Ofcourse notes/lotus stuff is probably more than what you want to spend.

I set up my own Jabber server, and while the initial configuration was a bit difficult, its run like a champ for over 3 years, I've never had to fiddle a knob on the thing since.
