Ok time for another gizmo quiz! Bring it on ;-)

To win you not only have to tell me what this [s89109057.onlinehome.us] is but who invented it.

Is the part in his lap part of the gizmo?

Let me clarify. The gizmo is the thing on the table under his left hand. The thing in his lap is part of an earlier similar invention.

Good job bird! It is basically a clock. Sometimes the obvious seems like the least likely. Now what is its significance in history and who invented it?

A pun for you...
The school had a door made of iron. That was why it was called the school of hard knocks.

Hehe, ask mivox what happens when you present time measuring devices (or parts thereof) in a gizmo quiz and I'm around... ;)

Here's your pun...
As a surgeon he was famous for his short cuts.

Nope. Invented way before.

Since it doesn't appear to have a pendulum, it was probably meant to work in a non-stationary environment (ie. on a ship).

Interesting history behind this gizmo. Here's the site that I got the photo from http://212.219.145.17/museum/harrison/ [212.219.145.17] and you can learn about it's history. You can also check out http://www.harrisonclocks.co.uk/home.htm [harrisonclocks.co.uk]. The other pictures actually show it to be a very beautiful clock.

I was first introduced in the excellent book
"Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time"
