How good is "Microsoft Office" grammar checking? How good is it for proofing word documents? I tried searching on MS website but found no information.

I second that, but there has to be some basis on which it is build. Just trying to find it...

In my experience the American English version simply flags all common problems of which the the grammar checker is aware -- whether or not there is an error in usage. It doesn't offer any real help and, in some instances, is just plain wrong.

However, if you're not sure of your writing you can use it to point out some common errors. You'll have to find the answers to the problems yourself, but after awhile you should be comfortable enough to turn the grammar checker off.

Although I am fairly confident about my ability to write "proper" english I always have the grammar check on just to see where it would highlight. In most cases it's pretty useless but it does make you think. It seems to not like the usages of passive even though it is justified.

Only one way to find out is to use it yourself and see how you like it. Most of the time, although not always I just ignore it. It also does not make any good suggestions if it makes any at all.

Apparently it likes split infinitives. :)

Try this one [oup.co.uk]! OK, it doesn't integrate totally with MS Office, but it is much better than the Office one, up with which I will not put ;)

Of course a book about grammar is much more accurate than a program that checks it... but the program does it alone and with the book you have to check yourself the document.
So you have to chose: accuracy or speed.
