Just found this message on a personal website. Made me laugh :)

"This page has been optimized for the Microsoft Internet Explorer 3 and Netscape 3. Tho' Mosaic 2.0 looks O.K. too)"

Today, somebody visited my web site using Netscape 3. Obviously there is a target audience out there...

That is probably an example of what I term the "Once upon a time in a server far far away ..." syndrome.

It is common with personal and university sites. Someone gets all fired up about "the internet" and sets up a web site then after some period of time leaves for greener pastures leaving little orphan pages on a dusty server shelf.

I think it also says something about the housekeeping ability of some system administrators. But then they aren't able to update patches in a timely manner either ...

I installed a computer with Windows NT4 today, and it came with Internet Explorer 2.0 by default. I surfed a few sites just to try it out. FYI, the only site which worked properly was WebmasterWorld, which works perfectly! Trouble is, the Microsoft site was impossible, and I had to use another computer to get the upgrade installer for IE6.

People tend to use the version of IE supplied with their OS, and as there is no easy upgrade for IE2 (and perhaps IE3 too), some people might have kept it, if it was only for occasional use.

These old browsers are probably from government offices that haven't updated their computers since 95. I have a feeling that much of these 3.0 people still floating around are very aware of how crappy their surfing situation is and would change it they could convince the powers that be to upgrade their computers to the 21st centry.
