Does anyone else here wake up thinking code?

My first groggy thought in the morning . . .

back in the days of the "real" google updates, when I would sit at my comoputer for 24-48 hours straight checking things out, I would often dream about algos and linking patterns. It's not real pleasant :)

I once dreamt java. I knew it was time to take some time of.

I don't dream code but when I am doing everyday chores I am always looking for the 'undo' button!

I also try to use the phone as a calculator sometimes and I'm not going to tell you what I do with remote controls!

I've thought up some truly genius code in those last few minutes before falling asleep - only to forget it all in the morning. Mind numbingly irritating -- both the fact I think about it so much, and the fact I forget it.

I've come up with some truly genius things late at night too, just before drifting off. Trust me, if you do end up remembering any of it, it doesn't make nearly as much sense in the morning! ;)

When I was studying C++, I woke up one morning extremely distressed that I hadn't had time to call the destructer before waking up.

not with html nor programming code, but sometimes I've waked up thinking somthing like
sleep() crashed

and other similar error codes.
About dreaming, I almost never remember what I've dreamt, but I remember a morning I waked up, started my computer and finished a function I've been working in for some weeks without figuring it out. I supposed I've dreamt the code ;)

Greetings,
Herenvardö

PS: the function was about finding the fastest way in a labyrinth, and since that day I've used the same idea a lot of times ;)

Way back when, in assembler programming, I would have to place the address of the code I was exiting in register 14. Then, when ready to come back and resume that code, the program would 'branch to register 14', thereby returning to the place it left. I once woke up to use the loo, and upon getting there realized I forgot to load register 14 with the address of my bed. I though I was stuck in the can with no way to return! Sad.

I've never really dreamt in code but I apparently say some interesting things when I'm not really awake.

One night my wife walked into our bedroom.

"What are you doing here?"
"What do you mean?" She asked.
"You don't have access to this database!"
"Well...I broke in."
"You couldn't do that, you're not that smart."

I can't say that I dream code but I'm wondering if there's a parallel to hypergraphia [news.harvard.edu] in the programming world? I might have an acute case of it ;-)

As a matter of fact I have - on several occassions though it's not just limited to code. It usually involves some problem or application I'm working on.

The most likely time is in the later part of early morning 4-6am. Sometimes during that timeframe, I'm not in a really deep sleep and if I'm really puzzled by something it comes into my dreams. It wakes me up enough for me to realize I'm not fully asleep but not enough that I'm able to get out of bed. I'm in a netherworld - a pure brain world where my physical body is somehow removed. About as close as I can describe it.

I do some of my best problem solving when I reach this state. I certainly am far more focused and able to work through the upcoming day's "to do" list and develop a plan of attack. Strange...Jaylo and Janet never seem to stop by.

I keep a notebook by the bed. When I can manage to get some sleep I often wake up with the solution to a problem. If I don't write it down, I forget all about it. It's as if resolving the issue in my sub-conscious erases it from waking thought. I do the same thing for tricky verses of poetry or marketing ideas.

I keep a notebook by the bed.

Amateur. Real webmasters keep computers by their beds. When I wake up thinking code, I want to test it ASAP.

Well, if I wake up thinking code, I call a code poet. :)

I was once working on my business plan..it was late night, and I had to go to sleep. When I woke up, it was it! I had dreamed the best business plan in the world which could be making me a lot of $$$s.

Except, when I turned my PC on, I went to WebmasterWorld (forgetting about the business plan), I answered some threads, and then I remembered. Why did I turn on the computer? and the answer came out of my mouth, to write the business plan.
But, I had nothing left in my head, as WebmasterWorld had sabotaged my business plan.

I was so distressed that I...
I...
I..
went back to sleep.

The End :)

I call and leave myself a voicemail.

I see things extremely clearly in the fifteen minutes before I fall asleep.

That's also when I work out my golf swing.

Coding dreams are usually nightmares where I can't solve the solution to a problem. But I'd rather have those than "real" nightmares... It takes me a several minutes to wake up. The first few minutes I'm apt to say something from my dream.

The most bizare one was when I woke up and asked my partner where the dinosaur was. (Dreamt I was married with kids, and a pet dinosaut that kept bity my ankles)

Usually BASIC. Very BASIC:

10 ON =1
20 OFF =0
30 CLOTHES = ON
40 FOR R=1 TO 3
50 KETTLE = ON
60 Make_Tea()
70 Drink_Tea()
80 NEXT R
90 IF ALERT = OFF THEN GOTO 40

I have always kept a notebook by my bed for those thoughts. Unfortunately, I also have many notebooks full of incoherant writing. Most of them I can pick out a couple words- and have no idea what the others are- but I'm sure they were brilliant...

maybe I need to go the ipod route
