(Early) Portable Seismometer [sciencephoto.com]. This is an instrument used for detecting earth tremors. Photographed in the museum at the Vesuvius Observatory, Naples, Italy.

The earlier one I mentioned was Chang Heng's seismoscope [inventors.about.com].

As 4crests said (I think).

Even although both words have the same meaning,
I will concede defeat to bundlt, as I am much to busy to host next weeks gizmo quiz (or to have a long debate in lingustics).

sem4u - So what happens now?

It was a team effort everyone seemed to contribute something - reading through it looks to me as if bunltd (LisB) put the last bit of the jigsaw in place and is the winner.

Don't forget this is fun everyone and here is a collective funny [keith-charles.com].

lgn1: no linguistic debate needed - it's ok either way.

you did type portable first

But I'd be happy to host next week. Well, georgeek?

Good quiz everyone. The Grand PooBah and originator (macguru) will be proud - especially for upholding the "funny picture" tradition.
