There was a really good PBS special about this recently, where they built a replica from scratch and flew it (and crashed it too).

I have done a bit of looking for info and there are some really good sites on www.dogpile.com search Powered Flight.

And a book called "The Flyers" by Noah Adams (here in the state he is one of the voices on the public radio). He also reads it on CD. Complete. Lots of research. Good stuff
