Is There A Spamless/Spyless Instant Messenger

Probably not, but it's worth a try.

I'm looking for an instant messenger. Used to use ICQ years ago before it got downright ridiculous with spamming - and then spyware.

I remember that Powwow was an interesting concept... take someone on a guided site tour, scribble on a whiteboard, etc.

Does anything like this exist anymore? Are there any alternatives to ICQ, AOL and MSN?

Just curious, since i extensively use Yahoo and MSN, what kind of spam/spyware are we talking about? Yahoo seems just fine?

Well first you have to ask yourself, who are you going to be messaging with?

Secondly you have to ask, what are they using? ;)

there are loads of alternatives. I use the open source one called miranda.

I use it to connect to icq, but I think it does msn and aol and even irc at the same time. It's lite, small footprint, no ads, does file transfers, look and feel is a lot like icq.

but thats just one of a million, do a search for icq clone

GAIM, DeadAIM, and Trillian are pretty good AIM clients. I strongly reccomend BX over mIRC.

Trillian's awesome and allows you to connect to all of the messenger services.

Won't touch anything but trillian anymore (despite the infrequent problems with lost messeges).

No spam at all, and my ICQ# is still in the low 7 digits.. i.e. a while around...

I use AOL, MSN, and YIM and have used ICQ and I think YIM (Yahoo Instant Messenger) is the best so far. I think there are no ads because it's part of Yahoo's integrated strategy (free tools, ads on web pages instead of applications). The webcam and super webcam features are kick ass and the message archive is very useful for business.
