What happens to Agent Smith?

What exactly happens to Agent Smith in the end? Why does he and his duplicates 'explode'? He did say something about 'everything that begins has to end'.

Trinity and Neo will definitely get an Oscar or two for their 'dying scene' performance. Jeez! What a movie! :(

Neo defeats him :O

Smith takes over Neos body which is connected directly to the source and the machines delete Smiths program. Obviously this will affect all Smiths cos they are connected and have the exact same code.

He said this because he absorbed the Oracle. She came through Smith to let Neo know what had to be done.
