I did this well over a year ago and I know a lot of people have joined since then. I am sure I am not the only one to wonder where in the hell some of the user names come form and what their origins are.

Well mine came about just before I went to do a series of presentations on Australia in 2000. I was setting up a hotmail account and I had to move away from the PC during the sign up process. In that short interval a joker decided to change and submit my details. You guessed it he changed it to ukgimp. I could not be bothered to change it so a gimp was born.

Care to share yours?

Mivox - isn't that a type of mini russian spy camera?

As for werty...I started using the name werty back in grade school(my guess is 1983) while playing "hunt the wumpus" http*//www.inthe70s.com/games/wumpus/index.shtml. I could not type and it would take me too long to use my name so I picked werty off of the keyboard.

Years later when I got a computer I still could not type and would use this for my login and my email address, passwords(this habit has changed), things like that.

I used to work for a company and we would meet over mIRC and I used werty as my handle there, and they would call me werty in real life. I also run a message board and most of the people off of there know me as werty in real life as well. Over the last few months I have tried to remove my real name from the internet, so that online I am only known as werty.

I even get mail adressed to werty delivered to my house.

Doesn't everyone have a stuntdubl on the web?

My name also came from the fact that I love to scratch records. (Picture me getting home from work putting on headphones and gyrating records back and forth for a half an hour for stress relief)

I don't record much music anymore, but at one point I was hoping to put out an album entitled: "Compound Breaks and Deep Cuts". I had a whole host of cheesy puns to go with the music (everything in turntablism is "breaks", "cuts", or "scratches"), and the album art was sweet:) To bad the music sucked;) Now I just scratch for fun. Ahhh....maybe someday.

Ally is what most people that know me call me. And of course, growing up I got called Alley Cat a LOT. Thats all. Not a particularly interesting story. :)

Yidaki
The yirdaki (or Yidaki) is an unstopped wooden pipe - of cylindrical or slightly conical shape, and usually constructed of certain indigenous termite-hollowed hardwoods, or more commonly in the past, of bamboo - that is regarded as the cultural heritage of Yolngu clan groups of northeast Arnhem Land (Australia). A musical instrument, the yirdaki is played by learned and accomplished members of the clan as accompaniment to various genres of song. The yirdaki accompanies the voice and bilma (clapstick) during mortuary, initiation and cleansing ceremonial rites, and in contemporary times, also in secular occasions including accompaniment to folk and gospel songs.

Yidaki aka Didgeridoo - imho the most fascinating instrument.
Playing the Yidaki gives a unbelievable good and warm feeling.
Highly recommanded for all stressed webmasters. :)

I picked up mine back in 1996 when I did my first SEO campaign for a major rock n' roll band. It has stuck ever since and most people understand the meaning behind it once they figure out what I do. ;)

You can call me pageoneresults, pageone or POR.

I have no imagination, so I used my first name.

I got a blogspot account, and while I was able to come up with a name for it, I haven't used it because I haven't been able to come up with a good nickname to sign the entries with yet. Pathetic isn't it? (I want it to be anonymous, so I don't want to use my first name.)

I have been able to come up with other names to use for other message boards though (but they're not good enough for the blog), so that I'm not using the same name everywhere.

ppg - Power Puff Girls, that's the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw it, but I had a gut feeling that wasn't what it stood for.

I have a time machine and a very long scarf.

Well, actually, I don't have a very long scarf... but I do live only a couple of miles or so away from where Tom Baker's scarf was knitted.

I've always hated nicknames or being called anything but Shelley, my given name. When I was new to the web I found the whole username thing odd. So for my first account somwhere I took the same route as Lilliabeth

I borrowed it when that cat wouldn't leave the keyboard alone while I was trying to set up an account.

and called myself Rastuscat, after my cat Rastus. But I didn't know people would use my username, I assumed they would see my real name (which was also on the account) and call me that. I guess I just didn't get that whole part of net culture yet or I would have thought of something better.

Most of the time people shortened my username to Rastus or Rassie, which was confusing. "But Rastus is sitting on my knee, I'm Shelley!". Also people often thought I was male, just like they assume Rastus is too (she's not). And apparantly the name Rastus has some kind of cultural connotations in the US that I'd never heard of and still don't really understand.

So when I started signing up with more places I dropped the cats name and subsitituted my own. 'Shelley' is usually taken already but shelleycat generally isn't. I don't like it though, too weak and girly somehow. I still just don't like nicknames.

I was wondering if that was where your name came from!

but I do live only a couple of miles or so away from where Tom Baker's scarf was knitted.

Wow! That's so cool! A while back there was a thread about favorite science fiction shows and I wanted to say Dr. Who was the greatest ever, but I was afraid people would laugh at me! (It is of course though!)

I'm with Trisha. Gary is my first name but that's often taken by someone else. So I use GaryK. The "K" is for my last name, Keith.

For many years, back to the days of CB radio my handle was Trail Blazer. I got tired of that and really wanted to be honest with people so GaryK is what I wound up with.

just because I am.

If i'd have given it *any* thought at all I probably would have used IAm. I had fun over the summer at the rainbow gathering in Utah - yep, I'm a hippy too. Someone would ask my name, I'd reply "IAm". Got lots of smiles (maybe they were just out of their minds) and for a few brief hours thought I might have met the 'love of my life', aka Galaxy.

Alas, not yet or again :) But we had a great time playing our drums until the sun rose over the mountain tops.

Finally, on the topic of names: grandsons name is Veda Vyasa
Pretty cool, IMO.

But do you own a police call box? Especially one that's 100x larger on the inside than the outside?

And if so, do you know where I could purchase a wardrobe with an especially large secret compartment, with lots of talking animals inside?

Well, I have used this name since sometime 1994. It is, of course, made up of two abbreviations for the same word: Dr & Doc
It was one of those times when I was trying to think up a name (was considering Mel O'Dee if I were to become a pro musician ;) )

I don't know... I started using DrDoc for kicks, and it kinda stuck with me. Now I don't think I could get rid of it if I wanted to. It's become my personal trademark. :)

Then of course, it's kinda neat to be refered to as 'Doc' :D

I had thought of asking Brett to change it to "killa_thread" because like every newbi I was having trouble keeping a thread alive

Well mine stands for "you'ld think so wouldn't you", I spend a lot of my working time selling computer equipment over the phone. Most people I know who sell computers have a similar phrase, eg:

"So will your FireWire card work with my bodged together Linux build and the webcam I made myself out of matchsticks?"

"Well sir, you'ld think so wouldn't you?"

If you're ever buying a computer, watch out for similar non-comital phrases. Roughly translated they mean "how on Earth am I meant to know that you muppet? But I've decided to take the chance and sell it to you anyway."

Looking for something to amuse the kids...

Nah. Boyfriend dumped me. The wardrobe would be for my own amusement. ;) Being a master of interdimensional travel, I thought you might be able to help out.

(The kids may all get snare drums for Christmas... or karaoke machines... or electronic keyboards... or one of each.)

"Well sir, you'd think so wouldn't you?"

ROFL!

Webwork is really an oblique reference to my day job: "wet work".

You know .... blood and mayhem, cloak and dagger, black ops, delta force, kinda "if I tell ya I gotta kill ya stuff".

Ooops! Boy, are you all in trouble.

I may look and behave like a balding, middle aged, overweight, nearsighted nice guy geek but that's just my disguise. Effective, huh?

Okay, I'm sort of unimaginative so I chose Webwork.

Plain Jane simple: Web work.
