Reformatting a Windows ME PC to install Windows 2000

How do I do this?

I wasn't sure where to put this, so...

I have a computer that has WinME on it. I want to reformat the drive and install Win2K on it. Since the format c: /s is no longer allowed, I just put in the Win2K CD. Then I chose to install it over WinME (so I thought). Now I have a computer that is running both. Although I can only get the Win2K to run in safe mode. I don't get it. Can someone help?

Hi, if you don't need any data off the Windows ME computer. Boot from CD using the Windows 2000. There should be an option to format and/or clean install. You're doing the right thing by moving from Windows ME to Windows 2000. Windows ME was one of Microsoft's more noticeable mistakes.

You can format with a boot floppy with format C:

You have to fdisk the drive first and remove the non-DOS partitions (ntfs) and create a new partition. Then when you format it with a boot floppy the drive will be using FAT 32 as the file system. Not recommended for Windows 2000.

sus818 is correct. The best way to do it would be to set the boot sequence in the BIOS( hit delete to enter setup) to boot from CD. Then boot from the Windows 2000 CD and you'll get options to remove the exiting partitions and repartition/reformat. You can then reformat using NTFS rather than FAT32. Once that's done and the first part of the Windows installation is complete go back into the BIOS and reset it to boot from the hard disk.

Where can I get specific instructions. I just want to wipe the drive clean and install Win2K. Preferabbly without booting from the CD.

Preferabbly without booting from the CD

Why?

Because my CD has folders for the Pro, and server version. I can't boot from it.

Hmmm, you just admitted publically you have a pirated copy of Windows. Since you won't be buying a copy, I suggest you find an official CD that is bootable.

sun818, ryan has edited his post.

IF it is a pirated copy I don't want to have anything to do with helping you on this either ryan8720.

This doesn't make any sense. When I put the CD into the CD drive under WinME, it comes up like normal. But when I try to boot from the CD it says it can't find it. Is there another way to do this?

When I put it say I want to upgrade ME it says it can't find C:\WINDOWS\UpgDlls\w95upg.dll\WIN9XUPG\W95UPG.dll . This leaves me with only the option to add it as a second OS.
