According to Swedish radio, the word "Canada" comes from an old native word meaning "Big village".

Man, that's one BIG village! ;)

yup - it comes from Kanata, a Huron or Iroquois word for camp or village. Basically what happened was the French settlers showed up and some Huron or Iroquois Indian pointed to his village and said "Kanata" and the French thought he meant the whole country was called Kanata. And yessir - it's BIG :)

And that village was located where Quebec City is now. I knew my history degree would come in handy at some point ;)
