Ok so for the first time I have caughy someone linking to some images on a site I own - not only images but photos I took on a vacation.

Is it wrong to want to replace the image with someting obscene? Or should I be civil and email the webmaster?

What would you do?

that depends on the situation, really...

however, there is also a method of using mod_rewrite to prevent hotlinking and even display another image telling the viewer where/how to go to your site and see the image... [trying to remember the forum on webmasterworld] i believe it is in the "website technology issues" forum... can't remember exactly, though... a search on google should turn it up... seems that google's index search of ww is what everyone uses...

Tempting as it is, don't do the obscene thing; it's tacky and might traumatize some poor child someplace. Besides, where are you going to get an obscene photo without violating someone else's copyright? ;-)

Suggestion: replace the hotlinked images with an ad inviting people to visit your site.

i agree with buvkworks - when this happened to me i duplicated the uimage and fed the linker a version with my url across the middle in big red letters. - worked like a charm.

buckworks thats funny! Your right I don't own the rights to any obscene images - wich may be a good thing ;)

I will go the civil route and put up some free advertsing for myself, thanks for guys

I like getting hotlinked...then I can see who has liked something on my site...I prefer that than having someone download an image from my site and then putting it on their server because then I'd never have known about it.
