Windows XP Service Pack 1 messing up my printer

When I installed Windows XP Service Pack 1 for XP Pro, my print (connected via USB) no longer worked.

I could not find any reason for this on the Microsoft site. I tried installing and unistalling and all that. No success.

Finally, I uninstalled Windows XP Service Pack 1 and the printer works fine again.

Any ideas how to make Windows XP Service Pack 1 and printers work in harmony.

Anybody else have this problem?

I'm beginning to think that the best workaround might be an old machine as a backup, on which you never upgrade anything (and pray nothing mechanical breaks), plus a ballpoint pen... or maybe a pencil.
