This is a very early REM song. It brings back a lot of memories about travelling around eastern europe in 1997, when I had two or three cassettes with me for the trip and this was the song which was played most. I've never been able to go without listening to it for very long, even though my music tastes have changed drastically.
What about you? What is your favourite song ever and why?
Nina Simone - "My baby just cares for me"
Motzart - various piano
Gutav Holst - "The Planets"
Hendrix - "Cross Town Traffic"
Beatles - "Back in the USSR"
Rolling Stones - "Get back"
Focus - Hocus Pocus
The Who - "Who are you"
Elton John - "Can I put you on"
Deep Purple - "Space Truckin"
AC/DC - "Touch too much", "Riff Raff"
Ruts - "Babylons Burning"
Led Zepplin - "Ramble on"
etc :-)
Anyone recall whose song "Alternative Ulster" was?
back to work now ..
Followed the Dead through the mid 70's (perhaps that why I have so much trouble spelling). When Keith and Donna were "Playing in the Band".
If you were never touched by the Dead, then it's hard to explain or pick a favorite ......
Eyes of the World , Uncle John's Band, Brokendown Palace, Franklin's Tower, Iko Iko ....
All you got to do is smile, smile , smile
Here Without You - Three Doors Down
Bring me to Life - Evanescence
Everything You Need - Madison Avenue
Freeek - George Michael
Wherever You Will Go - The Calling
Desert Rose - Sting & Cheb Mami
Why those? They keep me motivated and remind me of someone I miss.
(PS: there are too many songs out there that mean too much to pick just one!)
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Jeff Beck
Hendrix
Van Halen
Def Lep
Zep
Chaka Chan
Olita Adams
The Police
Floyd
Santana
Pat Metheny
Peter Gabriel
Toto
…
… no they’re all great but there’s opera? Mozart, Berlioz,
Oh I give up, it impossible ;)
Reasons:
Lyrics - 'I wish I heard voices, wish I was a telephone' + works in references to Genet, James Joyce, Brecht, Chandler and even aludes to Kafka's The Castle + it's all about love and longing
Music - speeds up and slows down at will + epitomises the Golden Rule 'any more than 2 chords is just showing off'
additionally:
roots radicals - rancid
freakscene, the wagon, get me, the little baby - all by dinosaur jr
ocean man, push the lil' daisies, bananas and blow - all by ween
blanket - urban species
if i had to choose it would be banana's and blow at the moment...
they all rock. so listen.
